Best Wishes Mrs. Roche!

Posted by Orla On April - 25 - 2012

Tom and Mrs. Roche with Gortskehy Board of Management (Andrew Heaney missing from photo). On Wednesday, February 28th we had a party at the school for Mrs. Roche. We had this party because it was her last day in Gortskehy School. We all made cards and bought her a gift which made her very happy. Mrs. Roche invited a clown who performed magic tricks and painted our faces. She was very good and we all had great fun.

On Friday evening we had a Mass at Carras Church for Mrs. Roche and her family. Everyone took part in the ceremony and then we went to Tierney’s of Foxhall where we had a party. A band played music and we had sandwiches, cake and lemonade. It was great fun. We will all miss Mrs. Roche and we wish her good luck in the future.

Fresh Film Award for Gortskehy Pupils

Posted by Máistir Ó Beirn On April - 6 - 2012

Fresh Film Festival 2012In this week’s (April 3rd) Western People and Mayo News, Cróna Esler and Ciara Moynihan respectively have written two lovely articles covering our recent award at the Fresh Film Festival in Limerick. The film “Job Done” can be viewed here at the bottom of our FÍS Film Project page.

Job Done as Gortskehy filmmakers take top prize

Western People, April 3rd 2012, Cróna Esler (page 4)

“It seems there’s no end to the talents of the students at Gortskehy National School, writes Cróna Esler. This week the children have yet another reason to celebrate, having been presented with the Ireland Young Filmaker Award in the junior category (age seven to twelve years) at this year’s Fresh Film Festival.

Pupils from fifth and sixth class produced a film based on a short story about a tiger kidnapping. They were highly commended for the visual style of their film, Job Done. For the last 16 years, the Fresh Film Festival has celebrated young filmakers aged 18 and under. It has showcased their work, celebrated their achievements and chosen Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year.

The filmmakers submit movies they have made themselves and have the opportunity to see their work on the big screen at four locations in heats around Ireland. Many winners of the competition have gone on to successful careers in the film industry and each year the awards uncover a wealth of new filmmaking talent.

This year’s festival celebrated Made in Ireland films and record 400 entries were received. The festival strives to ensure it is engaging, relevant and challenging and has continued to develop links with other organisations and filmmakers from outside of Ireland. Louis Lovett [best known as Dieter in Killinaskully] was in attendance to present the awards to the winners at the ceremony in Limerick.”

Job Done, Gortskehy NSJob well done for Gortskehy NS students

Mayo News, April 3rd 2012, Ciara Moynihan (page 34). Ciara has also posted the film here on the Mayo News website.

“Fifth-and sixth-class students from Gortskehy National School in Annfield, Hollymount, were among the winners at Young Filmmaker of the Year Awards at this year’s Fresh Film Festival. Actor Louis Lovett was in attendance to present the awards to the winners at a glittering ceremony in Limerick last Wednesday, March 28.

This year’s festival theme was ‘Made In Ireland’, and a record 400 entries were received. The Gortskehy NS students were Highly Commended for Visual Style in the Junior Category (7 to 12 year olds) for their film ‘Job Done’. Based on a short story by Patrick Hession and James Frizzell, the plot centres on a tiger kidnapping.

Patrick Hession and Diane Tierney turned in great performances as the balaclava-wearing raiders, while Orla Beddows, Toni Burns, Mollie Higgins and Nicola Hession were convincing as the terrorised family members, tied up in their own front room. Rachel Hession shone as a little girl hiding under the stairs. The film is a thriller laden with suspense – will the raiders discover the girl, and what would they do with her if they do? The eerie music and cinematography add to the mood.

Behind-the-scenes expertise was provided by camera operators James Frizzell and Justin Commins, and costume and props people Amy Frizzell, Rebecca Flanagan, Marie Mulhern, Thomas Higgins, Conal Beddows and Enda Hession. ‘Job Done’ was skillfully directed by James Frizzell – could he be another James Cameron in the making?

Gortskehy/Meelickmore team - Claremorris Area Winners 2012

On Wednesday the 21st of March Gortskehy N.S joined with Meelickmore N.S for the Cumann na mBunscol Mini 7’s football competition. It was a lovely day and everyone was excited to play. The matches were played on Claremorris pitch and each game lasted for twenty minutes – ten minutes a half. Our first game was at 12:30 against Taugheen/Lehinch. The team was made up of Niamh from Meelickmore in goal, Amy (Gortskehy) and Olivia (Meelickmore) on the backline, Nicola and Diane from Gortskehy in midfield with Ann-Marie (Meelickmore) and Marie (Gortskehy) in forward. Gortskehy/Meelickmore took the lead in the first half and continued to lead in the second half. They won the game and now faced Aghamore.

Rebecca came on in the second half of both games while Rachel and Orla also played a part as did the other girls from Meelickmore. The match against Aghamore was tough but Gortskehy/Meelickmore stood their ground and won the game. The next game was the toughest. It was against Irishtown/Logboy. Irishtown/Logboy were leading at half-time by a point but Gortskehy/Meelickmore bounced back and won the game by six points!

The next game was to be played on Friday, 23rd of March. We played Ballyhaunis and won the game by 1 goal and 7 points. We are now the Claremorris Area Champions and were presented with a cup and medals. A video of the presentation can be viewed below. Our teacher Mr. Ó Beirn brought us to Supermacs to celebrate. We were excited to hear that our next game was on Monday the 26th of March against Kilmaine. Kilmaine were a very good team and we narrowly beat them. We are now through to the county semi-final which will be played on March 28th in McHale Park, Castlebar at 11:30am. If we win we will play in the county final which will also take place tomorrow at 12.30pm. This is the first time our school has reached this stage of the competition and we are very proud. All support would be appreciated.

BT Young Scientist Video

Posted by Nicola On January - 24 - 2012

Here is a video of our trip to the RDS for the 2012 BT Young Scientist Exhibition.  We were the only primary school from Mayo selected to perform an experiment at the exhibition.  We discovered that every liquid you see will probably be either acidic or basic.  Water is neutral.  Scientists use something called the pH scale to measure how acidic or basic a liquid is.  Our experiment investigates the qualities of acids and bases in liquids.  Furthermore, how acidic or basic our soils are determines what we can grow in our gardens.   We built and programmed a robot to help with our experiment.  It uses colour and ultrasonic sensors.  Watch the video to find out more!
