Active Flag Partnerships

Our Active School Committee & Ms Thomas lead the Active Flag initiative in our school. They meet regularly to plan ahead and assess how we are doing. We plan what we are going to do for the next number of weeks and the committee visit each classroom to announce the ideas.

We have an Active Schools notice board where we share news. We are currently displaying the results of the recent ‘what club are you in’ survey that 6th class worked on.

We had good existing partnerships locally, and we have formed new partnerships this year which will go into the future. We always had a great partnership with the local GAA club. We have a GAA coach that comes to our school annually to work with the children in the senior room. We take part in Cumann na mBunscoil and mini 7s every year, fielding a mixed team with other schools in the area. We also take part in the cross-country each year.

We have a great partnership with ‘Mayo Sports Partnership’  this year, and we had Deirdre Donnelly join us during active week for our community walk. Deirdre has been a great support this year and has provided us with great ideas for active schools.

We had a great partnership with our wider community this year. We were taking part in ‘The Daily Mile’ and we organised a ‘community mile walk’ on four consecutive Fridays which proved very successful! It was great to see everyone taking part and enjoying time together while being active. We also held a Community Day as part of active week.

The children from 1st-6th class hold a partnership with Claremorris Leisure Centre, and attend swimming lessons during the year, covering the aquatics strand of the PE curriculum.

We have formed new partnerships this year with Claremorris Tennis Club, Tourmakeady Handball Club and Tug of War Ireland as we invited coaches from each into our school for active week to run taster sessions for the children. The children thoroughly enjoyed these sessions and it gave the them the opportunity to try new things!

We have always held strong parental partnerships, and this was underlined this year as Sharon Fitzpatrick provided exciting line dancing lessons to the children in the middle room. Ms Thomas learned the dances too and in turn taught the junior and senior room some dances. We identified ‘Dance’ as an area for improvement at the start of the year and this has proved an exciting way to engage the children in the strand.

Our Active Schools walkway was erected today, in partnership with a past pupil, Jamie Hession who is on TY work experience. Jamie measured out our boundary wall and marked out the walk for us. The middle room were very excited as they were the first children to walk the walkway! It will be a great way to keep the children active at lunchtime. Thanks Jamie for all your help with this project!

Gortskehy goes Country – Active Week Finale

We held a Community Day here in Gortskehy today as part of our Active Week! It was an amazing, fun filled day for everyone in our community to enjoy!

We had a beautiful sunny morning for our Community Walk with Deirdre Donnelly of Mayo Sports Partnership. Deirdre spoke to us about the importance of getting activity into our daily lives and how it makes us feel better. As we were walking, she was giving us tips on how to get more out of our walk. Thank you to all the people who joined us!

Our Active Week Grand Finale took place this afternoon as we went country with Jason Moyles – and what an afternoon it was! He put on a great show for us and we showcased our line dancing skills to everyone! We might even have a few musicians and singers in our midst! Massive thanks to Sharon Fitzpatrick, our talented dancer who has given so much of her time to our school this year teaching us all the dances! It was a wonderfully inclusive event, involving our parents, grandparents and friends in the community. We all enjoyed the sing-song and the dancing. Thanks Jason for making it a memorable day!

We were privileged to welcome back two of our past pupils today, Enda Hession and Justin Commins who are part of the St. Colman’s College Senior Team with the Aonghus Murphy Memorial Cup that they won this year. It was great to see them back in Gortskehy and they received a great welcome from everyone! Great role models for the children! It was also a privilege to have Noel Tierney, former Galway Footballer, who was part of the Galway team that won 3 All-Irelands in a row in the 1960s with us today. He has grandchildren attending our school and it was lovely to have him part of our community day!

The children were very confident with their football skills and decided to take on Andrew!

We would like to thank everyone who joined us today and helped make the day so much fun!

Gortskehy Staff in the school colours!

Our wonderful Active Schools Committee

Our Playground Leaders

We have had lots of fun together this week and we had the most enjoyable Active Week here in Gortskehy.

Here’s a short summary of the fun we had!
